VAT Calculator
The calculator adds VAT to a net amount or removes VAT from a gross amount at any rate, with a step-by-step calculation.
The VAT calculator adds value-added tax to a net amount and removes VAT from an amount that already includes it. Pick a rate or type your own.
VAT rates
VAT rates depend on the country and the type of goods. For example, the standard rate is 20% in the UK and France, 19% in Germany, 21% in Spain and the Netherlands, and 22% in Russia from 2026. Many countries also have reduced rates (such as 5% or 10%) for food, books, medicines and other goods. Check the current rate for your country before using the result in accounting.
How to add VAT
VAT = Net amount · Rate/100, Gross amount = Net amount · (1 + Rate/100)
Example. £10,000 net, 20% VAT.
VAT = 10,000 · 0.20 = 2,000; gross = £12,000.
How to remove VAT from an amount
In a gross amount, the tax is not 20% of it but 20/120 of it:
VAT = Gross amount · Rate/100 + Rate
Example. £12,000 including 20% VAT.
VAT = 12,000 · 20 / 120 = 2,000; net = £10,000.
A common mistake is to take 20% of the gross amount: that gives £2,400, which is wrong. The rate applies to the amount excluding tax.
Amounts are rounded to two decimal places.
