Discount Calculator
The calculator finds the sale price, the discount percentage and the original price, and shows how much you save.
The discount calculator finds the sale price, the discount percentage from the original and sale prices, and the original price if you know the sale price. It also shows how much you save.
How to calculate the sale price
Sale price = Price · (100% − Discount%) / 100%
Example. A jacket costs $2,500 with a 15% discount.
Discount: 2,500 · 15% / 100% = $375.
Sale price: 2,500 − 375 = $2,125 (or simply 2,500 · 0.85).
How to find the discount percentage
Discount% = Original price − Sale price/Original price · 100%
Example. From 2,500 down to 1,990: 510/2500 · 100% = 20.4%
How to find the original price
The sale price is (100% − discount) of the original price. To find 100%, divide the sale price by that share:
Example. With 15% off, an item costs 2,125: 2,125 / 0.85 = 2,500
A common mistake is to add the same 15% back to the sale price: 2,125 + 15% = 2,443.75, not 2,500. The percentages are taken from different amounts.
Two discounts in a row do not add up
20% off and then another 10% off is not 30% but 28%: 0.8 · 0.9 = 0.72, so the price is 72% of the original. Each next discount is taken from the already reduced price.
